Patrick the Patriotic Pony

Apex High School - Hey! or Hay! My name is Patrick the Patriotic Pony! I love to celebrate what’s great such as America. I come from a long line of ponies that have served our nation, from my great, great grandfather carrying George Washington across the Delaware to my Great Uncle carrying Paul Revere. And in these hard times, I would like to remind fairgoers to remember the positive things about our country. And our State Fair is Great! Lets celebrate it! I believe that the best way to express my love for my country is by coming to this WONDERFUL State Fair all decked out in stars and stripes. Join me at the State Fair to Celebrate What’s Great!

Giggles the Goin' Green Turkey

Athens Drive High School - Athens Drive High School introduces you to our recycled friend Giggles the Goin’ Green Turkey. He celebrates the Fair with Flair. He is outfitted in the chicest of party hats sporting trendy plaid and Athens Orange and Blue pompom, all from recycled materials. He himself is of minimalist construction, consisting of a discarded satellite dish, used tin and chicken wire, soda cans, bicycle tires, reused bags, repurposed found objects (some recycled from his good Farm Animal Frenzy friend Billy the Belly Goat, ‘09) and a pickle barrel. To make him safe, his fan is rimmed with pipe covers used to save heat and energy to reducing carbon emissions. His fasteners consist solely of hot glue, screws and bolts with minimal holes. He is looking forward to his life at the fair and welcomes your vote. Vote Giggles the Goin’ Green Turkey from Athens Drive.

Weee Weee Weee Celebrate What's Great!

Cardinal Gibbons High School - Students brainstormed about the fair theme and decided to depict what they celebrate about North Carolina and the State Fair. They collaborated on the unified theme of water conservation and then created animals that showed individual personality. Each animal began as a thrift store “onesie” that was stuffed with reused plastic bags. Once the personality was established newspaper paper mache was added to hold the form in position under the clothing found in attics, closets, and thrift stores. The head was attached to the body and painted. Each personality is celebrating the diversity within the state of North Carolina and working together as a team to conserve water to help preserve the resources for future generations.

Sir Walter DurHam

Durham School of the Arts - Walter is made from fence wire donated by a parent last spring. We wove grocery bags into the rusty old fence wire covering the rain barrel. We recycle year round at Durham School of the Arts! The pink parachute fabric is 20 years old. It was cast off from a parachute factory in Roxboro. We have been using scrap from that factory visit for years. Walter wants to remind all of us to conserve water to recycle and to reuse what we can. You know pigs are the smartest animals on the farm! Art students have worked hard to get Walter into shape. We hope he will collect rain water at a local Bar-B-Que restaurant after the fair or for the school greenhouse. He is built to take the weather for a long time. He has his plumbing and is ready for rain! He is all about celebrating what is great about the fair and recycling!

Jolly Green Gobbler

Enloe Senior Magnet High School - The Jolly Green Gobbler is made from 100% recycled materials. The body is made from recycled food boxes, and the wings are made from recycled cardboard shipping boxes. The head is created of Paper Mache made from recycled News and Observer newspapers over a core fashioned from a recycled piñata. The neck is a traffic cone that was purchased, not stolen, by an Enloe parent for use in teaching his daughter how to drive. All the fabric and feathers are recycled from old prom dresses, and costumes used by the Enloe Dance Department. Incidentals such as the feet and hat were made from items purchased at Goodwill or used in the Enloe Visual Arts Department. The Jolly Green Gobbler's magnificent tail is created from a Chinese decorative fan recycled from the decor of a Vietnamese restaurant. It has been covered with "feathers" made from recycled National Geographic magazines. The eyes are made of Gatorade tops.

Gruff is relaxing with some great fair food after a long day looking at exhibits! Once Gruff returns to our campus, he'll be going green as a rain barrel to provide water for our first Farm Animal Frenzy entry, the "Trojan Chicken" that has since been converted into a large planter outside our art building!

Hamina Biscuit

GRACE Christian School - Hamina Biscuit and her piglets are a celebration of what’s great about the NC State Fair – FOOD! She and her piglets have really “pigged” out. Created from a recycled pickle barrel, a recycled 5 gallon water jug, and recycled table legs, Hamina has been decorated using recycled food and beverage containers, boxes, and wrappers. Her piglets were created from recycled milk jugs and decorated using various recycled food advertisements. After the Fair, Hamina can easily be converted into a rain barrel by lifting her unattached body off the stand and setting it upright.

When Pigs Fly...at the Fair!

Panther Creek High School - Our animal is a pig transformed into a roller coaster car. It contains a rider who is loving the N.C. State Fair. We spent many days brainstorming our idea. We tried to stick closely to the theme: "Celebrate What's Great". The students felt our roller coaster pig ride depicts the fun, food, and excitement the N.C. State Fair brings to town. Our pig coaster car sits on a portion of the roller coaster frame. The coaster and the pig are made of recycled material we found or collected as a group. It is mostly made from the pickle barrel, recycled plastic bottles, found scrap wood, recycled cardboard, shredded recycled paper and old clothing. We used duct tape, super adhesive glue, and screws to put it all together. Our pig coaster is spray painted and hand painted with acrylic paints. Designed and created by Panther Creek High School's Sculpture/Ceramics I students and their art teachers.

Mitch the Metallic Pig

Wakefield High School Art Honor Society - Wakefield National Art Honor Society created a metallic pig from all found objects and recycled materials. For the side of the pig, we cut up soda cans, buttons, keyboards, disks, computer parts and scrap metals and screwed them to the sides of the base. For the head, we used an old propane tank, and a tin can for the snout, pair of goggles, and an old scuffed up construction hat. The legs of the pig are made of scrap metal on wooden leg shaped pieces. The design of our pig is a metallic, futuristic, construction pig.
